While using the FairTrak, QuickPick, or FairPick Flex apps with the FlexHub (the electronics box), the built-in RFID badge and scanner work after you pair the RHC to the FlexHub from the app's “CONFIG” screen via Bluetooth.

2nd Sight's FlexHub (electronics box for FairPick, FairPick Flex, and QuickPick) contains a printer that communicates with the Ruggedized Handheld Computer ("RHC") using Bluetooth.

Bluetooth has certain connectivity limitations.

This article describes some Bluetooth connectivity issues and the steps to take so Bluetooth works optimally.

Symptoms

  • When the RHC's Bluetooth connection to the FlexHub is compromised, an orange bar that says “Disconnected" appears across the bottom of the app. If you see this, neither the electronics box's RFID badge scanner, the printer, nor FairPick Flex scale will work. You can continue to use the handheld to scan badges, if necessary.
  • If using the FairTrak or QuickPick with the portable Rugged Bluetooth Printer (Star Micronics), a failed Bluetooth connection will prevent the app from printing and "Star Micronics" may disappear from under the "Printing" option in the app's CONFIG screen.

Environment and Use
The following could be affecting the reliability of the Bluetooth connection:

  • Out-dated RHC firmware
  • Interference from other Bluetooth-enabled devices (portable speakers, headphones, cell phones, other FlexHub’s….)
  • Low battery (a weak battery causes auxiliary functions like Bluetooth to turn off)
  • Overwhelmed RHC processor
  • Overheating
  • Microwaves and fluorescent lights (they emit the same frequency as Bluetooth)

What You Can Do

  • Check the Settings --> About Phone --> Custom Build Number on the RHC. If the Custom Build Number shows a date before the current year, contact 2nd Sight for instructions on updating the device at 509-381-2112 or This email address is being protected from spambots. • Turn Wi-Fi off in the RHC settings when you are not syncing data to the Portal.
  • Minimize the number of other Bluetooth-enabled devices around the FlexHub.
  • Instruct employees not to connect to any device called “FlexHub” in their Bluetooth settings.
  • Ensure that you are properly and consistently charging the FlexHub. If charging the RHC and FlexHub simultaneously, remember keep the FlexHub turned on.
  • Turn the FlexHub and RHC off and on every 1-3 days to clear out the queue that is building on its Bluetooth module. Even if you auto power cycle the RHC, you will need to remember to power off the FlexHub every few days.
  • If the RHC is connected to the internet via cellular or Wi-Fi and the app is being heavily used and auto-syncing frequently, the RHC will “bog” down which may also stop the Bluetooth function.
  • If the RHC’s internal temperature rises above 110 F, it will shut off auxiliary functions like Bluetooth. Keep the RHC shaded from direct sunlight with enough air flow.
